Cuba in a Changing Global Community
Cubans continue to forge their own destiny, while remaining interconnected with the global community through personal relationships, academic exchange and community linkages. This seminar will enable participants to examine recent and contemporary issues in Cuba through diverse lenses, and within the context of globalization. Lectures will include five areas of scholarship that are central to learning about Cuba's place in today's global community: International relations, economy, education, society and culture. Themes for discussion with Cuban scholars may include: An overview of relations between Cuba and the United States; structural transformations in the Cuban economy and their impact on Cuban society; higher education; gender studies; perceptions of race; and effects of recent advances in healthcare, education, and changing employment opportunities on the psychosocial development of women. The seminar will promote opportunities for academic exchange with Cuban faculty.
Site visits will connect participants with the rich ethnic, racial, and religious diversity that is present in Cuban society and with a range of activities of local community groups. These include, among others, an Afro-Cuban community, Chinatown, a synagogue, as well as a clinic, women’s center, and markets in Havana.
The seminar will begin and end in Havana.
