Hybridity and Safety: The Regrouping and Resistance of Traditional African Religions in Bahia, Brazil with Sabrina Gledhill
Program Description: This talk focuses on how traditional African religions (specifically orisha worship) came to the state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil and regrouped to confront the challenges of slavery and religious persecution, developing into religious and cultural expressions that are uniquely Brazilian while maintaining strong links with their African roots. In addition to discussing the past, present and structure of the religion and religious communities known as terreiros—particularly those of the Yoruba-speaking Ketu "nation"—I will discuss the cosmology of the religion and some of the main divinities, and how aspects of their worship have impacted Bahia's cultural life.

Sabrina Gledhill is a British scholar of Bahian culture and history who grew up in Puerto Rico and has lived in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil since 1986. She has an MA in Latin American Studies from UCLA and is currently a doctoral candidate in Ethnic and African Studies at the UFBA Center for Afro-Asian Studies (CEAO/UFBA). Her presentations on Bahia focus on the “emic” perspective – the way Bahians view their own culture and cultural expressions.

French Notions of Disability with Myriam Winance

Myriam Winance is a research scholar with the INSERM (National Institute for Health and Medical Research) and the CERMES (Center for Medical and Health Research). Her research goal is to analyze what “a disabled person” is in French society, by analyzing the evolution of the notion of disability through discourses and processes of care (on a macro level) and the analysis of concrete practices and experience (on a micro level). She has also launched an ethnographic and interview-based research project on the wheel chair, examining how using a wheelchair transforms a person, and how norms of action and relationship are mobilized, questioned, and reinterpreted.
